This step-by-step guide shows Organization Owners how to set up and use IRS-TIN Verification in Next. 
 


What Is IRS-TIN Verification

IRS-TIN Verification checks applicants’ tax identification numbers to help protect your organization and ensure compliance. It validates Social Security Numbers (SSN), Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITIN), and Employer Identification Numbers (EIN) against IRS records.

  • You can add IRS-TIN Verification to:
    • Individual Profile Forms
    • Organization Profile Forms
  • When IRS-TIN Verification is enabled, Next:
    • Validates tax identification numbers against IRS records.
    • Supports SSN, ITIN, and EIN verification.
    • Checks proper formatting automatically.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Enable IRS/TIN Verification

⚠️IMPORTANT: IRS/TIN Verification is managed at the organization level and cannot be disabled for individual programs or program cycles.

  1. Logged in as the Organization Owner, click Settings
  2.  Select Profile Forms. 

2. Select Individual or Organization.

⚠️IMPORTANT: You need to set this at both the Individual and Organization if you want it on both.

3. Click the gear icon.

4. Toggle on IRS-TIN Verification.

5. Click Save.

6. Click Publish in the upper-right corner to make your changes live.


Once Enabled: Applicant Experience

Individual Applicants 

  • Once enabled, the Compliance section of the Individual Profile Form will request SSN or ITIN and Legal Name.

Organization Applicants

  • Once enabled, the Compliance section of the Organization Profile Form will request Organization Legal Name and EIN.


Access IRS/TIN Verification Results

You can view applicant verification status through two different pathways depending on your workflow.

View Results During Application Review or Post-Award

Program Owners and Managers can access verification results during Intake, Review, and Post-Award stages.

  1. Select the applicant's hyperlinked name from intake, review rounds or post-award
  2. Click Admin Controls in the upper-right corner
  3. Select Compliance
  4. Choose IRS-TIN Verification

View Results in the Participant Network

Organization Owners can access verification results from the Participant Network at any time.

  1. Navigate to Participant Network
  2. Select an individual or organization applicant's name
  3. Click Compliance Check in the top-right corner
  4. Select IRS-TIN Verification
     

Understand Verification Details

The system provides clear verification information:

Verification Status

  • Verified - The tax identification number successfully matches IRS records
  • Pending - The verification request is being processed
  • Not Found - The TIN has not yet been issued or does not match IRS records
  • Not Verified - The TIN has not yet been verified

Additional Information

  • Applicant Name - The name associated with the application
  • IRS-TIN Type - Whether the number is an SSN, ITIN, or EIN
  • Verification Date - Timestamp showing when the applicant last saved their TIN information

Privacy Note: For security and compliance reasons, administrators cannot view the actual tax identification numbers submitted by applicants. You can only see the verification status.
